Achievements for the month

Photography Students have done it again - a clean sweep of the top prizes in the 2001 Sanpellegrino B&W Photography Competition. Congratulations to:

  • Leah Holscher - 1st Prize
  • Justin Ridler - 2nd Prize
  • Natalie Jeffcott - 3rd Prize

Photography student Lizette Bell won Daimaru's Fashion Week Photography Competition. Work from the competition, featuring RMIT students, was displayed in the Daimaru Gallery.

Printing student and graphic designer Marcus Kostelac received a gold medal at the 36th International Worldskills Competition in Seoul, South Korea. As a member of the Australian team of trade and skill elite, he was also awarded a second medal for being the highest scoring Australian competitor.

Antoni Jach's novel The Layers of the City has been published in Turkey in Turkish translation. The Turkish title is "Sehrin Katmanlari", the translator is F. Devrim Denizci and the publisher is Turkiye is Bankasi Kultur publishers of Ankara. Antoni is a novel-writing teacher in the School of Creative Media.

Communitiy based design projects

The TAFE Design Group is busy working with industry and assisting with community based projects -

  • Diploma of Graphic Arts students in collaboration with students from The Works (BA Graphic Design) created the terrific publicity material promoting all the key FRINGE FESTIVAL 2001 events.
  • Diploma of Product Design students are preparing designs for the exteriors of the new 2002 fleet of Melbourne ambulance vehicles.

Avan Caravans, a large supplier to the leisure vehicle market, approached the Product design team to form a collaborative venture in the development of specialised components.

A joint project was forged between the Royal Children's Hospital and the Diploma of Product Design students to create life enhancing design solutions for disabled children. The initial range of concepts will be presented to the staff of the therapy unit in November 2002.

Faculty chat

Welcome Fiona Nolan, who has joined the Faculty in the position of Senior Academic and Research Administration Officer. Fiona's roles include providing advice on postgraduate research programs and candidature, Secretary to the Faculty Research and Graduate Studies Committee, liaison with the RMIT Research and Graduate Studies Committee and Office of the PVC (R&D) and Higher Education liaison with RMIT Admissions Office. Fiona is located in Bldg 2, Lvl B, Rm 4 and can be contacted on x53860

Faculty Training Programs

Following the introduction of the Faculty's new training programs, 190 staff have enrolled, or have been nominated by their supervisors to attend. Of these, 47 staff members have already completed their programs. The remaining 143 will be attending in Oct/Nov/Dec and early in 2002. Programs coming up include:

  • AVCC Academic Leadership Program 22 to 25 Oct
  • Finance and Accounting for Non -Financial Managers 21 & 22 Nov
  • Leadership Program and Team Building (James Ford) 3 Jan 2002

The Dean's Activities

The Digital Design Precinct was the main focus of the Dean's efforts this month. He continued to brief internal groups about the Precinct, established the external steering committee that is composed of representatives from State Government and other universities, and ran several workshops on specific areas of the DDP such as, new education initiatives, business development and design. The Dean also:

  • Presented a keynote address at the RMIT Training Board of Directors' Strategic workshop, focusing on the subject of the future and how technology, culture. and education will be effected.
  • Attended the government Information, Research and Development Board (IR&D) meeting in Canberra.
  • Joined Senator Alston's new panel which will work on issues surrounding creative industry clusters.
  • Attended the Senior Planning Forum retreat hosted by the Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Craig Fleisher, a leading academic from Canada, visited The School of Applied Communications to speak to postgraduate students in public relations and communications. A well published author and much sought after public speaker, Professor Fleisher's areas of expertise are in public affairs, competitive intelligence, and knowledge management.

  • 2001 Jack Clancy Lecture
    Interactive Communications: The Face of the Future
    Date: Tuesday 16 October
    Venue: Hotel Grand Chancellor, 131 Lonsdale St
    Time: Light refreshments at 6pm, for a 6.45pm start
    This annual lecture will provide an informative forum for communications professionals and students on the future of communications. Keynote speakers include Free-lance Journalist Stephen McKenzie, Peter Ryan, IT Director of Weber Shandwick; David Leadbetter, Product Marketing Manager of Pacific Internet; Peter Maher, Managing Director of Rehame; and MC Alan Mason, "The Mole".
    The free lecture is organised by Second Year Public Relations students as part of the PR Education Week festivities.

  • Breast Health Program
    Date: Monday 22 October

    The program teaches a method of breast self-examination and includes a video and discussion.

  • Public Art in Perspective
    Date: Friday 9 November
    Venue: Building 514 Brunswick Campus
    Keynote speaker: Dr Lisanne Gibson
    This one-day symposium will discuss contemporary public art issues including planning for public art, management, integration into urban spaces as well as identification, care and conservation.

  • 'Head Space' Exhibiton

    Graphic Design Honours' Students present an exploration into the minds of 11 designers.

  • Arts Alive, the weekly national radio program, produced by a group of students in the School of Applied Communications will broadcast its 250th episode in mid November. Stay tuned.
